2,500 Jobs Slashed in Detroit Budget
A detailed version of Mayor Dave Bing’s budget proposal presented to the City Council in Detroit earlier today calls for cutting some 2,500 positions, including slashing of services and the elimination of entire city departments. The plan includes $250 million in cuts to all departments and expands on an initial proposal presented earlier this month. Students Walk Out of Madison High School in Protest
Earlier today, dozens of Madison High School students walked out of class in protest of cuts to the district. Students told FOX 2 that they were walking out in support for their teachers, who are dealing with recent pay cuts. On Friday, teachers in the Madison School District were notified of a 10% pay cut, retroactive to last September. Source: Fox 2
NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs: Detroit Red Wings Take a Disappointing Early Exit
The Detroit Red Wings took another disappointing early exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs last Friday in an exciting Game 6 against the Nashville Predators. Nashville’s David Legwand scored in the final 13 seconds to send the Red Wings’ season prematurely than what most fans, sports commentators and Michigan residents had expected. President Obama in Michigan to Raise Money
Last Wednesday, President Obama had 2 scheduled fundraisers in suburban Detroit to help raise money. One event was at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn and the other was at Bingham Farms, home of Denise Ilitch. Denise Ilitch is the daughter of Mike and Marian Ilitch, owners of Little Caesar’s Pizza, the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers. This event was believed to collect up to $40,000 per donor. Obama is expected to potentially raise $1 million at Wednesday’s events. Obama last visited Michigan on January 27, where he spoke on higher education funding at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
